Maintaining Good Indoor Air Quality During Lockdown

It can be quite stressful when you’re faced with unfortunate situations such as social distancing and lockdowns. As a confined homeowner, however, there are still things you can do in your home to pass the time, such as checking your home’s indoor air quality. As experts in HVAC repairs, here we explain the importance of clean air in the home and how to maintain it.

Why Is It Important to Have Clean Air?

Delphine Farmer, an associate professor of atmospheric chemistry, along with her colleagues at Colorado State University, conducted an in-depth study to measure the emissions of indoor air pollutants that are the result of everyday home activities. It was crucial for them to find out which molecules are typically present in a home’s indoor air. In short, she dubbed what she found  “indoor smog”, which can potentially affect your home’s indoor air quality.

Although your indoor air should still be relatively clean if you have good HVAC services, this doesn’t exactly mean that the quality of your home’s indoor air is any better. Another study points out that we do think inherently better when we’re aware that we’re breathing in filtered air. For instance, having a good air purification system installed in your home provides the needed reassurance that your indoor air is free from bacteria and viruses.

How Indoor Air Quality Can Be Improved

To maintain clean indoor air, regularly check your unit to make sure its air filter is clean. If the filter has surpassed its lifespan, have it replaced accordingly. Air filters mainly serve to keep particles and small pieces of debris from entering your unit, so a filter isn’t enough to keep your air completely clean. This is when you need to install an air purification system.

Air purifiers are available either as stand-alone units or systems that can be integrated into pre-existing HVAC units. These systems effectively disinfect the indoor air of airborne particulates, so even the smell of smoke is eliminated. If you’re still keen on using scented candles and incense, just make sure to open a nearby window when using them so the smoke doesn’t accumulate and stick to the walls inside your home.
