When to Check & Replace Air Filters

Ensuring smooth, efficient cooling performance for your home means keeping tabs on the many components of your HVAC system. These include the air filters, which you’ll need to check and replace every so often to keep up smooth, continuous air distribution throughout your living space. A premier HVAC service company, ACS Air Conditioning Systems, shares more of what you need to know here.

  • Inspect your air filters monthly. Air filters trap dust, dirt, pet dander and other harmful particles to prevent them from circulating throughout your house. But over time, the accumulation of these particles will become excessive, and they’ll end up traveling into different areas of your home anyway. This will lead to poor indoor air quality. To prevent this, you’ll need to check your air filters every month–or even more frequently if you have pets–and clean or replace them based on their condition.

  • Clean or replace your air filters as necessary after checking them. You’ll know you need to change them promptly when the vents show an excess buildup of dust, dirt, hair or fur. If the air conditioning unit isn’t blowing enough cold air, this is also an indication that it’s time to replace your existing filters. Overlooking this task will not only hinder the performance of your HVAC unit, it can also strain its components, which can lead to a breakdown. Should this become the case, you’ll need to schedule the necessary HVAC repairs with a top air conditioning expert like ACS Air Conditioning Systems as soon as possible.

Air filter replacement is a task that homeowners can do by themselves. If you have disposal filters, replace them every month. But if your HVAC unit uses higher-quality pleated filters, you just have to clean them thoroughly and put them back afterward. These can go up to three months before they need to be cleaned.
