Energy-Saving Tips for Fall

Fall is a favorite season for many Americans due to the cooler weather and various fall activities. However, there’s one thing you need to pay close attention to as this season arrives — your energy bills. In this post, HVAC installation and repair expert ACS Air Conditioning Systems shares some tips on how you can save money on your utility expenses with the change of season.

Check for leaks, holes, cracks and drafts. Air leakage is a common culprit behind increased energy rates since it allows heat to escape and cold air to enter your home. This basically reduces the efficiency of your HVAC system, as air leakage causes your heater to run overtime. To check for air leaks, you should look for gaps, cracks or holes in your windows and doors. If you notice a space between your door and the floor, you can use weatherstripping or caulking to seal the gap.

Allow more heat and light through your windows. It’s always best to schedule an HVAC service before winter arrives. In addition to performing tune-ups on your heating system, it’s also a good idea to look into other components of your home — such as the windows.

If you have south-facing windows, open your blinds or curtains from time to time so that the sun can help warm the room. Then, when darkness falls, don’t forget to close them to lock in the heat.

Reverse the spin of your ceiling fan. Ceiling fans can help keep you cool or warm. In the fall, make sure to reverse the direction the blades rotate. When they move clockwise, your ceiling fan will push warm air back down and redistribute the warm air coming from your heating system. This way, pockets of cold air won’t settle in the corners of the room.
