Critical Fall HVAC Tasks

As the weather starts to get chillier, you’ll probably be spending more time indoors. That’s why it’s a good idea to make certain your HVAC system is working properly.

To ensure that you don’t miss any critical HVAC maintenance tasks, ACS Heating and Cooling has compiled a quick checklist of essential HVAC tasks below:

Replace or clean the air filter. As a good rule of thumb, you should replace the air filter every three months. However, you’ll need to replace it more frequently if you have a pet or there are members of your household who have allergies or respiratory conditions. Contractors recommend changing the air filter every two months if you have a pet in the home, and every 20 to 45 days if you have two or more pets or if anyone has allergies or respiratory conditions.

Make sure nothing is blocking the air vents. Dirty air filters are the usual culprit behind poor indoor air quality or airflow. However, it’s also possible that something’s blocking your air vents. Blocked air vents can strain your HVAC system, forcing it to consume more electricity. That’s why you need to make sure your furniture and any other objects near the air vents aren’t blocking them.

Remove weeds surrounding your HVAC system’s external unit. If your HVAC system has an external unit, you need to remove any weeds that have sprouted near it. Vegetation overgrowth near the external unit can prevent air from flowing out, impeding airflow and forcing the HVAC unit to work harder. The added strain can increase the risk of an HVAC breakdown.

Schedule an HVAC inspection. Routine HVAC inspections and maintenance are a must if you want to keep your HVAC system in good condition. In general, you should have your HVAC system inspected by professional HVAC contractors at least twice a year, ideally in early spring or fall.
