Managing the Humidity Levels in Your Home

High levels of humidity can make already hot summer days feel 10 degrees warmer. This prompts homeowners to set their thermostats even lower, increasing the stress on their air conditioning systems and causing their power bills to skyrocket. Many people even make the mistake of contacting HVAC professionals to try and resolve their cooling issues when the problem is really caused by humidity.

Let our HVAC specialists at ACS Air Conditioning Systems share a few tips on how to manage the relative humidity (RH) inside your home to help you survive the dog days of summer in complete comfort.

Change Your Filters

Your filters don’t just stop the spread of dust and contaminants in your home; they also contribute to controlling humidity levels. It’s important to change your air conditioning filters at least once every 90 days. Depending on demand, however, you may need to do this as often as once every 30 days. This also helps keep your AC running smoothly.

Use a Dehumidifier

Ask your HVAC technicians about humidifier/dehumidifier retrofits to an existing HVAC system. This will allow you to control the humidity level in your home using a humidistat, a thermostat that measures indoor humidity. A humidifier/dehumidifier system can help you all year round, as it can also aid in maintaining your RH levels on cold, dry winter days.

HVAC Inspection

Have a professional check your home for any air leaks that could be increasing your indoor humidity. A full inspection ideally should be carried out twice a year at the beginning of summer and winter respectively, but you can also choose to do it once a year without major consequences. It’s important to remember, however, that seasonal inspections offer more advantages.
