4 Things to Expect During Your First HVAC Maintenance Visit

Regular maintenance helps protect your HVAC system from problems caused by wear and tear, such as decreased efficiency and premature failure. If you’ve had a new HVAC system installed recently and are expecting your first maintenance appointment soon local HVAC service company ACS Air Conditioning Systems looks at what will happen during your first HVAC maintenance visit.

1. Thorough inspection. A maintenance inspection appointment is like an annual physical. All components of your HVAC system will be inspected and tested thoroughly. Since maintenance inspections are conducted in preparation for the season, fall maintenance visits are focused on the heating system while spring maintenance visits are focused on the air conditioning system. Shared components like ductwork, air handler, and thermostat are inspected every visit.

2. Identify problems and provide solutions. HVAC technicians are trained to identify problems in HVAC systems (most of which are caused by normal wear and tear) and come up with solutions to be discussed with you at the end of the inspection. In case the solutions involve HVAC repairs, your technician will first explain its scope so you can make informed decisions.

3. System cleanup. Dust, pet dander, and other airborne particles can accumulate in your HVAC system and block airflow. Your HVAC technician will clean areas where particles accumulate, such as in the air ducts or on the air vents. Your technician may also recommend replacing the filters in the air handler. These should be replaced every three months and don’t require any technical knowledge of HVAC systems. They may also recommend having your air ducts cleaned, ideally done every five years. A clean HVAC system can perform reliably and efficiently over its life span.

4. Discuss solutions. At the end of the maintenance appointment, you will receive a report of your technician’s findings and discuss solutions to problems they find. Some solutions may involve ordering replacement parts, which you will be advised about if there will be costs involved and how long it will take, as well as alternative solutions if available. You will also be given advice on optimizing your HVAC systems performance, including improving your home’s insulation, sealing your doors and windows, and improving air circulation throughout the house.
